Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Dr Graham Owen Jones MBE rose from enlisted musician to Senior Director of Music for the Household Division—responsible for the five Foot Guards bands and the music of Britain’s greatest ceremonial occasions.

From bandsman to Lieutenant Colonel

A life spent helping
others perform.

The beginning

A musician in the Royal Artillery Band

Graham began his professional life as an enlisted Army musician. Alongside the band, he studied harp with the celebrated Maria Korchinska.

1981

Selected for Kneller Hall

Three demanding years on the Bandmaster’s Course culminated in prizes for composition and orchestration—and the beginning of a career in leadership.

1993

Appointed MBE

While Bandmaster of 16th/5th The Queen’s Royal Lancers, Graham was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for outstanding service to military music.

2001

Director of Music, Coldstream Guards

His lifelong ambition fulfilled, Graham became the 16th Director of Music of the Coldstream Guards, leading one of the most recognised military bands in the world.

2007–11

Senior Director of Music, Household Division

At the summit of British Army music, he held responsibility for the five Foot Guards bands and occasions of national and global significance.

Today

A second career with the same purpose

Graham now speaks, conducts, teaches and advises internationally. He is President of London Band Week and continues to serve veterans and his local community.

Heroes reached No. 1
in the UK Classical Chart.

Under Graham’s direction, the Coldstream Guards signed a major Decca recording agreement. Their 2009 album spent four weeks at the top of the Classical Artist Albums Chart and reached No. 13 in the main UK Albums Chart.

    Graham serves as an Armed Forces Councillor Champion, supporting veterans, cadets, remembrance and the Armed Forces Covenant. He also created Channel KT4 to bring local charities and community organisations to a wider audience.
